2. Trapped Gas or Indigestion
Although it may seem minor, gas buildup can cause sharp, stabbing pains in the abdomen, sometimes so painful that they are mistaken for a heart problem. The left side is usually more affected because gas tends to concentrate in that part of the intestine. If the pain improves after passing gas or having a bowel movement, the cause is probably digestive and not serious.
3. Spleen Problems
The spleen is an organ located in the upper left part of the abdomen. Although it doesn't usually cause problems frequently, when it does, it can be serious. An enlarged spleen (known as splenomegaly) or a ruptured spleen, usually caused by a hard blow, generates intense pain in that area. This discomfort can radiate to the left shoulder and require urgent medical attention.
4. Left Kidney Problems
Pain originating from the left kidney can also manifest in the abdomen, especially if there is a urinary tract infection that has spread to that organ or if kidney stones are present. Kidney stone pain is intense, intermittent, and can radiate to the back or groin. It is also often accompanied by other symptoms such as blood in the urine or difficulty urinating.
