5. Abdominal Hernia
A hernia occurs when part of the intestine protrudes through a weakness in the abdominal wall. Hernias can also appear on the left side and cause pain, especially when straining, lifting heavy objects, or coughing. This type of discomfort is usually easier to localize, and a small bulge can often be felt.
6. Ovarian Inflammation or Gynecological Problems (in Women)
In women, pain on the left side of the abdomen can be related to the reproductive system. Ovarian cysts, painful ovulation, or even ovarian torsion can manifest in this area. The pain usually varies in intensity and may be accompanied by changes in the menstrual cycle or unusual discharge.
7. Muscular or Physical Pain
Abdominal pain isn't always related to internal organs. Sometimes, a sudden movement, excessive physical exertion, or an injury to the abdominal muscles can cause discomfort on the left side. This type of pain usually worsens when moving the body or when pressure is applied to the area.
8. Stomach Problems
Gastritis or ulcers can also manifest in this part of the abdomen, especially when the inflammation affects the upper part of the stomach. The pain is often accompanied by heartburn, acid reflux, or a feeling of fullness after eating.
When Should You Worry?
Not all abdominal pain is serious, but there are signs that indicate you shouldn't wait. If the pain is very intense, appears suddenly, is accompanied by fever, vomiting, blood in the stool, or rapid weight loss, it's best to see a doctor as soon as possible. The body doesn't send signals randomly: when something persists or worsens, it's a clear warning.
